in case you didn’t know, arcade fire won at the grammys. they’re one of my favorite bands and i also consider their 2010 album “the suburbs” as one of the best last year. and i honestly felt a little offended when people didn’t know who arcade fire was. but i eventually got over it and found humor in this website – http://whoisarcadefire.tumblr.com/. but yah, this is the main reason why people should look for music outside the stuff they play on the radio.
not that i don’t like pop. I DO. duh. i like madonna, janet jackson, kylie, justin timberlake. but i also like looking for new stuff to listen to. and it takes a lot of effort. thankfully, i have like-minded friends who take the time out to discover music. and i thank them for that.
as part of a humanitarian effort, i’m presenting you with my first mixtape of the year. you can just call it my good deed for the day.
there will be no justin bieber, taylot swift, etc. and i hope you enjoy it! to download, please go here.
first off, i’m humbled by the overwhelming response to the first mix. almost 200 downloads, imagine that i didn’t think people would appreciate it as much. and to be completely honest, i got pressured to organize a mixtape for this month when people started asking me to make a new one! i didn’t even plan to make it a regular thing. hehe!
anyway, i was inspired to do a dance mix the day after the astonishing phoenix x daft punk performance in new york. but by the time i got around to uploading the mix monday morning, i felt the whole list of songs was forced. i’m not really good with themes as i’ve always thought that music is all about gut feel. the music i like to listen to reflects my moods so it doesn’t necessarily follow one genre.
so here’s what i came up with:
it’s a whole bag of different tricks – some new, some old, some hip hop, some jazz, some electronica, some hard rock, some folk-sy. had i added kylie or madonna or nirvana, this probably represents the spectrum of my musical taste.
also, i’m pretty happy to have included kanye and missy elliot(although only as a remix) in the playlist since i feel like hip hop is often misjudged and relegated to the dark corner of the “guilty pleasures” category. you’re no true fan of music if you don’t listen to hip hop. it has probably changed the face of pop culture more than any other genre in the past century. you can quote me on that!
that said, you can download the october mix here. hope you enjoy it!
