Justify My Love: How I Scored Madonna Concert Tickets

with 7 comments

I told myself I was going to write about my Madonna in Manila concert experience when I was able to buy my tickets and I’ve been able to recuperate from the ordeal. So after eating some carbs, hydrating/replacing my electrolytes and after catching up on all work emails and some well needed rest, here is my story.

I’m a fans club member but not hardcore enough to be lifetime/legacy membership. I got an icon live pass which allowed you to purchase tickets last Tuesday, July 21st starting at 11am(legacy/lifetime members started at 10am). I was nursing a fever and with my laptop, credit cards, Madonna spotify playlist on loop and berocca-filled thermos by my side and a battalion of Madonna diehard fans on speed dial, I was getting ready for my turn to do presale. But alas, SM ticketing online system had major glitches and could not handle the traffic. They underestimated Madonna fans!

In fits of madness, I called their hotline and in fairness to their call center agent, she was in constant contact and told me to go to the nearest SM bills payment counter to use my fans club code. With my death face and in my pajamas, I took Uber to SM makati. I figured I can’t handle the stress of traffic and finding a parking slot. I got there and found that the area I wanted was sold out and only the expensive ones were left. BTW, I was just getting the Upper Box seats.(The night before, my mother threatened to disown me if I bought the PhP 57k ones!! HAHAHA! sorry, mom but i am KURIPOT DOT COM). The SM girls were fantastic and the manager told me she had a feeling that they’ve only released very few tickets for presale and more will be released for Citi cardholders the next day, Wednesday, July 22nd. I said a little prayer and thanked them.

Fast forward to Wednesday morning, my Madonna fan friends kept me updated on who was already in the queue and so with much urging, I ran to SM makati at 9am with hair still wet but with my game face on. I arrived at the entrance closest to Glorietta and I was glad to see familiar faces(let’s just say we were all women of a certain age). We waited patiently until the mall opened at 10am. I was armed and prepared – I had my water jug and book. I was fully hydrated and medicated! I was ready for battle!

It was probably my best “lining up for things” experience in my life. In this day and age, nobody wants to physically go on queue but thank God for Madonna fans! We each had our own little Madonna moments and concert tips we shared while waiting. But as soon as 10am struck, we ran up the stairs to the second floor counters and took our numbers. I’m glad to say that I’m healthy enough to do a mean sprint thanks to electric studio, options Pilates and circuit 360!!!

The story ends well – I was able to buy 4 upper box tickets and I will see Madonna for the THIRD time next February!

Now for some Madonna Fan-dom FAQs:

1. I heard that Madonna will sing mostly her songs from her new album, isn’t that going to be sad?

I’ve seen the rumored Rebel Heart tour playlist and it had a few old songs, don’t worry.

BUT SERIOUSLY – You guys should expect this, the tour is not named “The Virgin” tour nor is it “Blond Ambition part II”. It is REBEL HEART TOUR and her new album is named REBEL HEART. Deal with it!

2.How can you justify the absurd concert prices?

I cannot defend the prices, they are truly and absolutely absurd. I’ve seen Madonna twice in concert previously and the one time I bought VIP seats, they were USD 400. And that was already in Madison Square Garden!

That said, I don’t judge. Did I judge the ones who saw JLo for PhP 35K?!?!?! NO. Ok, fine, I may have judged a little but it’s their money.

However, if you allow my inner finance geek to show its shiny little head, here is what I call Madonna Math:

Variable A = rate your Madonna fandom from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest
Variable B = the number of years you have been a Madonna fan

So here’s my formula,

Madonna concert ticket price / (A x B) = Overall value to YOU

For example:

57,000 divided by (10 x30 years) = 190 pesos!!!

See that ain’t bad at all.

3. What do you wear during a Madonna concert?

I say go all out, when is the next time Madonna will go to our fair archipelago?!??! She is turning 57 next month, people. She cannot do this for the rest of her life!!

I’m thinking of going as “lucky star” madonna or papa don’t preach” madonna.

NYC Typhoon Haiyan Fundraisers

without comments

As you know, my second home is NYC and some of my closest and dearest friends are living in the big apple. And with the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan here in our shores, many of my buddies wanted to find fun and unique ways to raise awareness and to raise funds to help out the victims of this devastating catastrophe.

My friend Celina and her crew just concluded a successful happy hour fundraiser at the Stellan. Along with super cheap drinks, they also auctioned off various luxury products. I heard it was well attended and super fun!

Another set of friends Andrew, Ross, Fil and Mia are organizing another fundraiser at Barrow’s Pub this Tuesday, November 26th! There’s USD 20 suggested donation plus a wide selection of USD5 and USD7 drinks. If you’ve gone to clubs/bars/pubs in the city, you know this is a total bargain. Plus you will also get a chance to win goodies from Phillip Lim, Tods, Oliver Peoples, Armani Cosmetics, L’oreal, etc!

What a great way to get sloshed and help the typhoon victims at the same time!

If you’re in New York City or the tri-state area, please support my friends! Also down a drink or two. Tell them Grace sent you. HAHA 😛

The Wedding of the Year

with 15 comments

Sorry to be on a long blogging hiatus for most of December. Between the holidaze and MOH/wedding duties, I was busy beyond belief and the first week of the new year was spent recuperating.

So here I am posting my first entry for 2013! And it’s all about Celina and her wonderful Boracay wedding. Celina is one of my closest and dearest friends from high school and I am honored she picked me to be her maid of honor. She is NYC based now so we have been planning and coordinating her special day for the past year or so. I’ve never been this involved in a wedding, it(at certain points) honestly felt like I was also the one getting married! LOLs.

The bride picked Boracay because she wanted a destination wedding for her friends and family coming to the Philippines from all over the world. The reception venue was at the beautiful Asya Premier Suites which we visited early part of 2012.

After many many many months of planning, the special day finally came. I was kind of dreading it, quite frankly. I find Boracay one big hot mess and having been THIS involved in the wedding made me nervous.

Despite all the hassle of being stuck in Kalibo overnight due to the typhoon, I was glad I was finally in Boracay! This bag welcomes me at my hotel – schedule of activities plus some cute knick-knacks for our stay at this beach paradise.

The wedding day itself was pretty hectic! After a night of partying from the rehearsal dinner and some drinking and dancing at…cocomangas(i KNOW! I haven’t been there since I was 25!), we had to wake up bright and early to have our hair and make-up done. Here is the view from our villa at Asya.

And thank you Armani beauty for all the cosmetics we used for the day. What a treat!

Unlimited supple of Armani Cosmetics for the wedding! Yay!!! #armani #cosmetics #beauty #makeup #igdaily #instadaily #instagram #instagood #instamood #instacool #picoftheday #photooftheday #bestoftheday #webstagram #igersmanila #igmanila #igphilippines #

With my other good friends from high school Heidi and Noee(I was also her MOH!). All the drama about our dresses were (almost) forgotten, we were just happy to spend the day together for our friend. We have been friends for some 20 years or so.

Lots of good food, drinks, music and the night ended with fireworks. It was truly the perfect wedding! (*pats self on the back) 🙂

Spent the days after nursing a slight hangover and getting a tan. This was taken early Sunday morning, the 30th. Empty white beach + sea breeze = PERFECT MORNING.

Boracay Munchie classic!! Choriburger. The standard beach sustenance for the partying twentysomething! #choriburger #boracay #thisiswhyimfat #food #foodporn #foodforfoodies #igfood #instafood #igdaily #instadaily #instagram #instagood #instamood #instaco

I also hunted for my favorite party munchie in Boracay – the choriburger! still pretty darn good and cheap! Glad that some old time faves are still pretty affordable in this island. I felt a little bewildered with all the development and materialism on the island but I guess that is the price you pay for success and progress(?!?!)

Unexpected! Sax player by the beach that one morning in Boracay. Made my morning! #beach #boracay #music #philippinea #itsmorefuninthephilippines #travel #igtravel #instatravel #travelgram #instafood #igdaily #instadaily #instagram #instagood #instamood

This was a special treat – sax on the beach! Despite all my apprehensions and “jaded-ness”, the wedding and the whole stay in Boracay turned out to be pretty amaze! It was a nice event/vacation to close out the year.

“williamsburg” x crazy katsu

with 19 comments

let’s consider metro manila = new york. i know it’s very hard to imagine but just try. trust me.

ayala triangle park
ayala triangle gardens

uptown = makati – that’s where i work and some of my seriously “sosy” friends like L live.

tiendesitas (photo courtesy of chuvaness)

midtown = mandaluyong/pasig/valle – that’s where my very laidback friends live like CVS, john-d, miguel, etc

downtown/brooklyn = quezon city – that’s where a lot of cool people live like me(HA!), kevin, kerin, therese, geolette, etc 😛

if you’re going to ask me about alabang, i’d say alabang is either connecticut or riverdale. or maybe hoboken(sorry, alexei, they’re all very rich suburbs though!)

that said, my friends and i were pioneers of the “maginhawa experience” even before it became cool to hang out there! maginhawa is a street in the UP – teacher’s – sikatuna village – diliman area of quezon city.

The Maginhawa Experience - Pino Resto Bar
the old pino restaurant

cozy and residential, people who hang out there are mostly of the UP-ateneo student community. so there has always been a steady stream of youth culture there.

meiday - cubao x
meiday @ cubao x

the last few years, this community has blossomed into a hipster enclave. i know..the H word. we fondly call maginhawa + cubao X the “williamsburg” of the philippines. and so many cool establishments have opened up including the very “hip” crazy katsu.

crazy katsu

crazy katsu is one of the newest much-talked about restaurants on the strip. whenever i drive by, it’s always so full. and since my friends therese and kate have been tweeting praises, we decided to try it out.

it’s a tiny restaurant with probably 10 tables inside and 2 more outdoors. the menu had less than 10 items on it and 6 of them – you guessed it – are tonkatsu dishes.

crazy katsu

we ordered gyoza for starters. nothing that special, i still think shinjuku on makati avenue has the best ones in the metro.

crazy katsu

kevin ordered a classic tonkatsu. the breading was a little overdone and was a little burnt but the taste was quite good.

crazy katsu

kerin had the katsudon. hmm nothing really stood out in this dish so i figured it was just typical.

crazy katsu

crazy katsu

i ordered the chicken katsu which was actually quite tasty – crispy on the outside with a little kick courtesy of the chilis.

what i liked most about crazy katsu was the price! we had all of that plus our drinks for a little over 600 pesos. i also liked the music and you can buy albums like taken by cars’ dualist.

pure shores

with 2 comments

i think i should post about my quick trip to boracay a month ago. celina and her stern friends were in town and originally i was supposed to go with them to hk. but things came up at work and well, i wasn’t exactly ready to see carlo. and i didn’t exactly want to be in hk and not go shopping(saving money for new york and christmas somewhere outside of this hellhole). and jiki was too busy to hang out with us(well, she was my “key” to carlo. ha.ha.ha.). so anyway, i just decided to go to boracay. everything just sort of fell into place. got a great deal at discovery shores two days before our planned departure.
