Glossy Special: Clarisonic Mia vs. Olay Pro-X

Prox vs Clarisonic

Many, many people have pushed me to do this review – what do I think about the Mia and the ProX? Which one is better? Yadda Yadda Yadda.

Let’s make one thing clear first – I am passionate about my Clarisonic Mia. It may have taken me a few months before I finally decided(more like coerced my brother and SIL) to finally purchase the Mia but since then, I’ve never looked back. I can never wash my face without a brush.

That said, during my vacation I left the Mia behind thinking I can survive but you guessed right – I did not. Only a day without my Mia, I went to Target and I bought myself an Olay Pro-X, a relative bargain at USD 28.

So what do I think about these cleansing systems? Here’s a quick lowdown:

Brush/Motor – The Clarisonic is clearly more sturdy than the ProX and the two have totally different ways of cleaning your face. The Clarisonic’s cleaning action is a combination of sonic rotation and vibration as you move it around your face while the ProX cleans in a very simple rotating motion with a very slight vibration.

For the Clarisonic brush replacements, they can be expensive and hard to buy. I buy mine through Amazon and just purchase in bulk. My friend Dianne found a very affordable source in HK and got 3 brush heads for HKD90! WHAT A STEAL! For the ProX, I heard the system is available at selected Watson’s however I haven’t personally seen them on the shelves.

Size – Although the Mia isn’t so big, the charger can be a bitch to carry around and the brush body itself is a little bit on the heavy side. The ProX is smaller and handy for traveling.

Versatility – The ProX that I got had two speeds although I have to say, it doesn’t feel much different. My Mia is mono-speed but I have the option to use different brushes. My personal favorite is the deep pore cleansing variety.

Charging – The Mia requires charging every 20 uses and it can take 8 hours for it to reach its full capacity. If you get impatient with this, it can be frustrating. The ProX uses two AA batteries, the bottom part is a little tough to open but once you get a hang of it, it’s easy-peasy. I don’t use my ProX every day, probably twice a week at most whenever I go home to QC and since August, I have only replaced the batteries once. You can opt to buy rechargeable AA batteries.

My overall verdict? The ProX is a good option for traveling and does a decent job at a very affordable price point(you can get one on Amazon for USD 19 bucks!!). However, I felt like my skin feels much cleaner after using my Mia versus the ProX. Maybe psychological though.

If you want a machine that will change your skin(well, it works for me tremendously), invest a little more and buy yourself a Clarisonic.

  7. I’ve been contemplating getting one. I currently use Philosophy’s Microdermabrasion kit to exfoliate. I am not beauty expert so I’d love to get your take on brush vs beads!

  8. HI! I would do one or the other but not at the same time. I’m also not a beauty expert 😛 I love my mia and use it every night. I’ve had fewer breakouts and I don’t do microdermabrasion nor facials anymore 🙂
