SKINCARE + MAKEUP
I never used to think about aging, until I turned 35 last year. That was the year when I I decided that it was time to step up from my whatever-drugstore-brand skincare routine.
In the mornings, I wash my face with Cetaphil, then pat on 2-3 drops of SK-II facial treatment essence, followed by two dots of SK-II Stempower cream blended all over. In the evenings, I wash my face with a facial wash that I get from our family dermatologist (although I never really go to see her except to buy facial wash), then follow with Human Nature balancing facial toner to make sure I remove all traces of makeup. I let my skin breathe for a bit, before patting on SK-II essence, and a bit of SK-II stempower moisturizer. On bad skin days, I prep with Bobbi Brown Illuminating Face Base, but most of the time I just skip this step.
To even out my skin tone, I apply Clinique Laserfocus very lightly on my skin. This has SPF 15 which is a plus, as I never bother to apply a separate sunblock on my face. Then I add color with Benefit Benetint, just a dot on the top of each cheek, blended outward. On fat-face days, I skip the blush and instead apply Human Nature Boracay Bronze powder with a Bare Escentuals kabuki brush on my cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin – basically all over my face, except the undereye area. This powder is a good, affordable find, but can be streaky at times, and the powder also breaks apart easily and makes a mess when dropped. On the recommendation of my friend Van, I’ve ordered Guerlain Terracotta 3 to replace it, and I’m just waiting for my order to arrive. I sometimes dot a bit of L’Oreal Base Magique on my nose to hide my pores, but for special occasions only, as I feel this product clogs my pores and would potentially cause me to break out.
Another thing I never used to think about, but I’m now obsessed with, would be eyebrow grooming. I have my eyebrows threaded at least once a month, and for everyday I use a K-Palette brown eyebrow liner to fill in and define my brows, which I feel makes me look instantly put-together. I don’t use eyeliner or mascara on a daily basis, but for weddings, formal events, or special occasions, I use K-Palette black eyeliner (very sparingly), curl my lashes with a Shu Uemura eyelash curler, then apply ModelCo Fiberlash Mascara, which doesn’t smudge and comes off in little flakes when you wash it off. I have sensitive eyes, so when I use eye makeup, I always make sure I have Eye-Mo red eye drops and Tears Naturale Free on hand.
I moisturize my lips with Carmex lip balm and swipe on some Lip Ice lip tint for some color, and I’m all set for the day. Lip Ice is one of those magic products that is packaged like lip gloss, but when you put it on, it immediately stains your lips with amazingly long-lasting color that stays on for hours. Similar products include Maybelline Color Bloom and Evera Magic, but Lip Ice is still the best in my opinion. Super cheap too, only P100+! I hardly ever put on lipstick except on special occasions. My favorite special occasion lip look is Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick topped with Soap & Glory Sexy Motherpucker.
Before getting pregnant, I was using Retacnyl alternating with L’oreal Revitalift at night. I copied these products from Dr. Alnette Tan’s glossy, and they seemed to be working for me, but I had to stop because their active ingredient (vitamin A) is a no-no for pregnant and breastfeeding women. I plan to go back using them eventually, though! Once a week, or whenever I feel I’m having a fat-face day, I apply Clarins shaping facial lift using the Clarins method, and I really feel this product has given me a smaller looking face! I also bought Clarins Double Serum on a whim, but it made me breakout, so I’m just using this on my hands until I finish the bottle.
BATH + BODY
When it comes to hair and body, I’m super low maintenance. I usually just share products with my 4-year-old son. I alternate Johnsons Baby Lavender Shampoo and Human Nature Tangerine Tango for my hair, and Dove and Johnsons Baby Bath for the body.
Post-shower, I apply Mustela baby massage oil all over, concentrating on my arms. The Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream is for superdry patches. I always have a tub of Giga Ginger-Peppermint Massage Cream on hand because I love the smell, and now that I’m pregnant, I often apply this on my legs to relieve tiredness. Before going to bed, I put Vapor Soove on my chest when I feel a cold coming on.
Everyday I apply Palmer’s tummy butter on my pregnant belly. I used this during my first pregnancy, and so far, no stretch marks. I also received this sample of Watsons stretch mark minimizing cream, so I’ve been trying it out some days. And the Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo is for post-pregnancy, when I won’t be allowed to wash my hair for two weeks (a Chinese custom).
My favorite scent of all time is Issey Miyake Summer Fragrance, but they only come out with it in the summer, and then discontinue the rest of the year. Their regular Issey Miyake scent is my second choice, but on most days I just splash on Gendarme cologne. I also like Baby Bench lemon drop cologne, which I decant into small atomizers.
RUNNING AROUND & TRAVEL
In my purse, I keep Gatsby oil blotting sheets and MAC blot powder so my face stays shine-free, and I always have to have Carmex with me everywhere I go. It’s the only lip balm that works for me and I panic when I run out. I also keep a bunch of lipsticks in there in case of emergency, plus a bottle of nail polish for nail spa days, just in case I don’t like anything from their selection. Also small containers of scent, Evian spray, and Giga ginger-peppermint massage cream.
Boots Cucumber Wipes are an airport pharmacy find that I love and hoard. I use them constantly on airplanes and when travelling, and I also keep a pack by my bedside for nights when I’m too tamad to wash my face. I simply swipe a sheet all over my face and crash into bed feeling wonderful. The fresh cucumber scent just makes me happy.
I have a 70+ year old aunt who looks amazing and is in excellent health. She told me that weekly massages are the secret to staying young! I spent years of my life looking for massage therapists who were “hiyang” with me, but when I finally found them, it was so worth it. I go to The Spa in Trinoma and Ki Spa in Greenhills, which are not the most convenient spas to go to for me, but I don’t mind making the trip. After a good massage, my skin looks more
