The Rise of the Tomboy
“The great style icons are tomboys” – Loulou de la Falaise
i’ve always been a bit of a tomboy. i grew up with a brother and most of the cousins my age are boys so i had to be into “boy” things – i learned to like sports, rock music, the outdoors, action movies, etc. i’ve always had a thing for comfortable “boy” clothes, loved it to a point of writing about it for the paper.
that particular quote from loulou de la falaise made me realize how being a tomboy, along with their nonchalant and awkward stance, really is a commonality among great style icons. there’s a certain underlying insecurity and timidness about them, maybe because they didn’t entirely feel comfortable about themselves growing up. yet that didn’t stop them from exploring fashion.
Here are some of my favorite tomboys:

coco chanel

loulou de la falaise

patti smith

sofia coppola

emmanuelle alt

phoebe philo

charlotte gainsbourg

vanessa traina

tilda swinton

Have you seen the Tomboy Style website? It’s a great inspiration. Dead Fleurette on Grayzine is great, too.
